My Favorite Thing To Do While Traveling

Posted on April 6, 2014

My favorite thing to do while traveling is:

  • Family friendly
  • Inexpensive
  • Educational
  • A chance to meet people – often times from various parts of the world
  • Involves fresh air and a little exercise

I usually fly in an out of Amsterdam when I go to Europe, so I had probably been there the equivalent of 20 days of my life. Yes, I walked around and saw the sites, went to some museums, etc. but it wasn’t until I did a walking tour that I truly learned about the history of the city. Why is there the infamous red light district? And a church right next to it? And why are there hooks on the tops of the houses? These are all questions that I never really thought about until they were answered on the walking tour.

Now I’m addicted and try to find a walking tour in almost every city I go to. Often times you can find free tours that you just tip what you feel appropriate. Depending on the length of the tour (they’re usually 1-4 hours long), and how much you liked the guide, $5-20 per person is average.

Here are some websites to find free walking tours - DC, NYC, Boston, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Charleston, Chicago, San Francisco, Berlin, London, Paris - Amsterdam - search for any other city!
