Peanut Butter-holic Switches to Almond Butter
Posted on June 12, 2013
Peanut butter was my crack. If you don’t believe me, just ask my former coworker, @JakeButzer, who used to comment every time he walked by my desk and saw me with a spoonful of peanut butter in my mouth- which happened to be a couple of times a day. It just tastes so good! Dare I mention how easy it is to just eat it right from the jar too?
According to the National Peanut Board, the average American consumes 6 pounds of peanut butter ever year! I probably skewed that stat since there was an extra large, economy size peanut butter jar in my cupboard at home – and work – at all times.
So what inspired me to finally give up my peanut butter addiction and switch to almond butter?
- The ingredients of Jif peanut butter shows sugar as the #2 ingredient in peanut butter as well as some ingredients I have to Google to find out what they are. On the other hand, the ONLY ingredient listed on almond butter – is almonds.
- A great blog by FoodBabe with a cool infographic comparing almond butter to peanut butter.
- I love almonds too (not quite as much as peanut butter), so why not switch if it might help me be healthier?
Honestly, after my first encounter with almond butter I didn’t know if I could make the switch for good or if I might have to ‘compromise’ with myself and just cut back on my peanut butter consumption. After my second outing with almond butter though, I’ve really gotten used to the flavor difference and actually found myself craving it!
Almond butter does taste more ‘earthy’ than peanut butter- kind of like how people say certain meat tastes ‘gamey’. To get over this, I just kept telling (perhaps lying) to myself that the only reason peanut butter doesn’t taste that way is because of all the sugar they put in it. No worse than telling kids broccoli tastes like ice cream, right?
